Oh, thanks for pointing that out. I guess I wasn't thinking straight when I said if the copied player dies, the disguise expires. The point of the pen is to disguise a single target as best as possible, health, weapon, and class, and taking out that target. After you take out that target, you basically can assume the role of that class.
For example, you laser pen an Engineer as he goes to the resupply room to get metal and go back to his sentry. You copy him with his wrench out, he goes back to his sentry, and you follow. He has a small sentry nest and a dispenser. What you can do is easily backstab him, and even if you miss, you can continue to fight him disguised. Once you backstab him, you can assume his identity because you will appear to have his wrench in the corner with full health.
This pen is rewards getting a chain of single-target kills.
