Hello everyone, I've stumbled on a problem. I can't help but feel that I've hit my skill ceiling, but I know I have potential to be much, much better. So if you would be so kind, take a look at this demo I made, and provide some tips and advice. I really feel like I haven't improved in the past 30 hours of gameplay. Link to demo is here: http://hosted.filefront.com/Methuselah13/ (It's the only file I have, called orange_x34) Now I know that this is in a small pub server, but my opponents weren't bad, and there was no team stacking involved. Help me here TF2F!

I will take a look when I come back from work.
It is quite natural to hit some skill ceiling once in a while. Happened to me several times.

When I die I often try to analyze it afterwards. Why did I die ?  What action could I have taken to avoid it. Did I not pay attention to my enviroment ?
Did I rush forward to quickly without checking where my teammates were and therefore got surrounded by enemies ?
Could I have used another attack path ?
And so on.

A minor detail I noticed for my own play is that I play much better with a higher mouse sensitivity. If I play with a lower sens I usually tend to not look around me much since it takes more effort to do so. Thereby I miss a lot of things going on around me.
For a while I therefore used the maximum sens 20 on my 1600DPI mouse. One drawback then is however that it makes shotgun aiming harder (aiming with the rocketlaucher on the other hand seems easier on higher sens). I lowered my sens to 10 for a while, but then my rocket aiming got screwed up.
Therefore I now play on sens 15 which seems optimal for me (even if many people would say it is ridicously high still).

I therefore recommend that you try some different mouse sensitivities to see what is best for you. The one you use might feel comfortable since you are used to it, but it doesnt take very long time to get used to another one.

A good mouse and mousepad is also very important.

But as I said, I will look a the demo later.

The name of the file gives me a clue to your possible problems. If you are playing mostly on OrangeX maps, try to find some servers running more stock maps or competetive customs like Mach4. Or, play on the TF2F servers!

Your skill ceiling is set by your own limitations, yes, but also by the people you play with and the maps you play on. Who knows which of those factors is limiting you at the moment?

Yea, I don't play excessively on Orange maps, I much prefer the stock maps and well designed customs. However, it's hard for me to find solid players to play with. I'll probably hit up a few TF2F servers today, see how it goes. And thanks for the mouse help Iller, I'll turn my sensitivity up and see how it works out.

Ok, I dont say high mouse sensitivity is automatically better. There are pro soldiers with a very low sens, so this is very individual.
But for me I noticed that I started to play better when I increased the sens and got used to it.

Ok, I have watched the demo now.
From that demo it is hard to say much at all on how to improve anything.
It is you and that medic playing against an almost empty server and when an enemy occasionally shows up you have no problem killing him..
It would be more helpful if you recorded a demo of some game where you and your team fail.

Yea, sorry about that. I decided to post this one because it was at a time when I was feeling particularly pathetic. Here's the link to a new demo, this one recorded on a TF2F server: http://files.filefront.com/gravelpit3dem/;12057702;/fileinfo.html

Hi again.
Ok, now i have watched your second demo and that was much more informative.

You seemed to try to attack a bit too much on your own without taking much notice what your teammates were doing.
So you seem to be a bit too brave in some situations. If you go alone and attack multiple enemies that are capping, you will most likely die.
Sometimes, when you want to take out a key target such as a medic, it can be worth doing a suididal attack, but in most cases it is not a good idea.

So a tip is to try to follow some of your teammates and try to keep track on where your medics are and stick close to them. In such a group you can help defend each other.

Time is of course important on Gravel pit, but it is almost always better to take it a bit easy, locate some heath packs and/or medics and then attack. A good idea is to wait for some teammates to attack and distract the enemies and then make a surprise attack from some other direction (By doing some horizontal rocket jumps you can travel quickly and take them by surprise (but don't do it when you are low on health)).

Then a good idea is to try to look around you a bit more (higher sens might make this easier). Quite many times you got killed by some enemy you didn't see until it was too late. I try to look around very much so it looks like I'm paranoid..
One might think "why should I look around here. There is probably nothing of importance here.", but once one you start to look around yourself more you will get surprised of just how much you would have missed by not doing so.

To keep track of you surroundings is particulary hard if you see an enemy or something dangerous somewhere. It is then very easy to focus completely on that single danger and forget about all the rest. It takes a lot of pratice to continue to keep track of the surroundings in such situations.

Something which is also very important is to be able to estimate your own skill versus the threat you are facing. Knowing when to retreat is a crucial skill.
Usually it is not worth it to fight until the end, but better to realize that "Ok, I cannot do this alone and I am low on health, I retreat for backup and heal."
To die and wait for respawn and walk back into the action takes a lot of valuable time.

Thanks a lot for watching. Today while playing I turned my mouse sensitivity up and it helped quite a bit in causing me to look around all the time. The aiming takes a bit of getting used to, but I think this is comfortable.

I have noticed that I really enjoy jumping into disastrous situations and hoping to emerge a hero, so your tips help clear that up.

Again, thanks for taking the time to watch, now let's see how your advice impacts my playing.
