There is going to be a map making class on 6/29/08 at roughly 4:30 est that will cover the basics of the Hammer Editor.  We will cover topics such as learning the tools, learning how to navigate the editor, and learning how to create and compile basic rooms.  It will be hosted in the TF2F vent channel and is open to anyone interested in learning the basics!

A couple of ground rules to help things go smoothly though:

  1. It would be appreciated if there was little to no idle chatter in the channel, it will be EXTREMELY difficult to handle any questions as is being 1 vs ? the last thing any of us need is to have to sift through idle chit chat.
  2. Questions are obviously acceptable, but please keep them on topic.  It again, will be difficult fielding all the possible questions and issues that will arise.
  3. There is no requirement about showing up at the beginning in order to listen in, however any latecomers will be expected to "catch up" to where we may be on their own.  Unfortunately I won't be able to halt the lessons each time somone hops on.
  4. Please have Hammer installed before you attend the lessons, I will be working the stuff along with you and it will be assumed that you guys will have it ready to go.
  5. It is recommended that you guys check out Big Lou's video tutorials here and here as it will help you to understand some of the stuff we will be discussing a little more readily.

My goal is to have everyone who shows up and catches the full lesson be able to build basic rooms, texture them appropriately, light them, compile, and run them by the end of the session.  I will not be recording myself, however I do intend to stay fairly true to what Lou has already put forth in his videos so you should be able to reference those for extra assistance.  Also, if any of you are interested in joining our mapper group The Mapper's Hideout just let me or Lou know!

I hope to see you all there and get something accomplished!

To help more one on one, use the text chat, as it could keep things a bit more organized. Just a suggestion.

I would agree, but right now we're looking at around 10 people or so vs me which is gonna be a beast to deal with if questions start flooding.

Is this going to be sorta like the tutorial that valve has on its developer wiki?  I'm talking just the basics.

Like I said, the goal of this will be to have everyone in attendance able to create, compile, and run basic room maps.  This will give them the launching pad to experiment on their own and actually be able to make sense of online tutorials in order to start taking things to the next level.

This is a great idea, I'd join if I didn't already know the basics (Might join anyway )
If it goes well are you considering more advanced ones?
