Seriously, in almost every server I see Pyros (at least 3-4 of them) rush in with a complete disregard of their life, flame wildly, and die in the process. And they continue doing this after dying repeatedly after getting maybe 1 kill in.

Pyro is my 2nd class, and I've rarely done this. Generally I flame them and then retreat, or try to flank them, etc. The only time I take them head on is if I'm facing a Soldier, or I have a Medic backing me up.

My theory is that Newbs see that 1 kill they got as some sort of improvement or win, or think this is DM and continue on in what they think works.

I believe it has more to do with the pyro being a very hard class to get your head around. As a pyro, I believe many people believe themselves more powerful or more dominating than other classes, and they usually don't think about what the enemy sees and more of what THEY see. If you're a pyro running towards a heavy you will act depending on your experience. I think we've all been there where we decided that the heavy was going to be out of ammo, or that we were going to get uberd right before we die. Obviously this never happens. This is a newb or noob choice. Since many of us have been there and died there we know not to run straight at that heavy.

Newbs do this because the pyro makes you feel invincible. It takes a lot of control to back up from a fight.

"All pyros are like that, it's a pub class." - All I can say is WTF!!! This is completely off. I'm just starting to get the hang of not bum rushing as a pyro and it's getting better. I use the shotgun almost more than my flamer.

Pyros are the only class that do damage over time and after their death, therefore they have an incentive to rush out and hope for a kill after their death, causing chaos as they go about their sucidal run. Except, a dispenser and medic nullifies any damage they do, and charges a medic's uber. Bad players will always carry out these attacks, even when they fail time after time.

Edit: The next person who claims pyro is a skilless/ pub/ n00b class will officially cause me to go spare. Seriously, it's a stupid elitist attitude to have.

It's not as simple as that. Think of the pyro like a sniper. There are certain places that he's way more effective than others. Sniper is good when perched, or facing a long open space, and not always when in tight corridors. Same with pyros, who are the opposite.

It's been like this since the update over the summer; the Pyro is now an all around stronger class than it was when the game was released and now that people can do some significant damage by just touching you with the tip of the flame the learning curve has become somewhat easier than when I (and many other Pyro players) picked up the game last fall. Before then however, even in pubs it was very rare to see a Pyro near the top of the scores in most rounds, but that's because it was a lot more frustrating and required more effective techniques in order to make the most out of your flamethrower. Above all that, the Flamethrower was and still remains as a weapon with a very deceptive range that a lot of players struggle with out of the gate. That's because from a first-person view, it doesn't really look like the fire is actually reaching out a few meters from the gun and this also decieves players moreso with the resistance effect (i.e. your flamer has a shorter reach while in forward motion, but at it's maximum while standing still or backpedalling). It's like the Spy situation nowadays, the class is now probably the toughest to play effectively in the game, and with the broken hitboxes on the Butterfly knife (among other things), many good spies get lumped in with the large demographic of newbie Spies, in that they all are "OMGWTF you only killed me b/c of a facestab, nub!". The same can be said for Pyros, many of the good players are lumped in with the sayings "Oh, Pyro's not hard; all you do is run forward and hold Mouse1"...I'm sorry, Mr. whiner Magee, but I can't hear you over the sound of me ambushing a Heavy-Medic from the back, circle-strafing the Heavy to death, and getting the Medic with my shotty/Axe.
